ABOUT ME
I've always had an appreciation for photography, but it became a passion (a better way of saying "obsession") in 2003. I suppose it came from one of my other passions in life: knowing God through his creation (a better way of saying "hiking & backpacking"). I grew up in a beautiful, rural valley near Venersborg, Washington where I spent the summers playing in Salmon Creek or hiking around the Cascades with my family. I owe much of my photographic eye and love of nature to my parents: to my mom, who is an artist extraordinaire and knows the latin name for every flower in existence; and to my dad, who has the amazing ability to stare at a waterfall for an hour, without blinking, while contemplating the deeper things of life, John Muir style. I now have a family of my own that I take hiking every chance I get (a better way of saying "making them wait around while I take photos"): my beautiful wife, Tiffany, and my two little dudes, Joshua and Owen. We live in Togo, Africa where we do sustainable community development and missions work.
ABOUT MY PHOTOGRAPHY
There are two important lessons I've learned about photography: one half of getting the shot is being at the right place at the right time, and the other half is knowing what to do once I get there. Being in the right place at the right time often means being in the middle of nowhere when most people are asleep, and sometimes it means getting myself into some very precarious positions (shhh, don't tell my wife). For me, that's the easy part. The part I'm still working on is training my eye to "see the shot," learning to apply (and sometimes break) photographic principles, and knowing my camera inside and out.
WHAT DOES DAY6IMAGES MEAN?
"God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day." Genesis 1:31 God thinks that everything he made is very good, and I tend to agree!
